A couple of news items which may be of interest to the Neighborhood:

First: you may have heard about plans to use the building at the old Total Environments location on Old Highway 63 as a homeless shelter. The initial newspaper reports indicated that the intent was to have 40 people there overnight during this winter. Subsequent discussions with the relevant city officials changed that to being just 10 people per night in order to comply with health & safety regulations. In addition, the shelter will only be open from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM, and there will be an armed guard on the premises from 11:00 PM until they close the next morning. A request for a conditional use permit allowing this operation from the first of the year until March 15th will be presented to the City Council next Tuesday. Second, and concerning the same location: it looks like Dave Fenton has started the process for C-P zoning on the rest of that parcel (part of it is already zoned that way), in order to locate his auto repair business there. This was the presentation Mr. Fenton and his engineer made to our Neighborhood Association previously, which met with general agreement at the time. The next step will be for him to present actual plans to the planning department for review.

Good Garage Sale

We had a fairly good neighborhood garage sale this past Saturday. A small number of households participated, but those of us who did had good traffic and sold a fair amount of stuff. We have had this neighborhood-wide sale for three years in a row now, and it has gone fairly well. We have it in early fall – sometime between late August and early October, usually depending on the home football schedule. We will probably have another one next year, so you might keep that in the back of your mind and set things aside to sell then. A final decision will be made at the annual meeting the first week of August.

Another Farewell

We received word this morning that Barbara Fischer, a dear friend and neighbor at 2103 North Country Club Drive, passed away Saturday morning, September 10th. An obituary has not yet appeared in the paper; if you see one please send us a link and we will add it to this post.

Warren Prost let us know that he had spoken to a hospice caregiver that morning outside Barbara’s house. He said they shared a few stories about her, and she made a point of saying how fond they had become of her and how easy it was to be a caregiver to Barb. She will be sadly missed but warmly remembered.

Edit – 12 October: There was finally a nice obituary in the Tribune last Sunday for Barbara. Here is a link to it.

Neighborhood Garage Sale

At the annual get-together and meeting earlier this month, we decided to hold the Neighborhood-wide garage/yard sale on Saturday, September 24th. We will advertise it as 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Anyone in the neighborhood who wants to join in is welcome. There will be advertisements in the newspaper and signs to lure people in. Last year – our second – we had quite a lot of people come through, so if you have stuff to get rid of, now is a good time to do it.

To participate, simply round up the stuff you would like to sell, and put it out on your yard or in your driveway on Saturday morning. You will be responsible for pricing everything and managing your own sales. We would appreciate a contribution toward the advertising from each participating neighbor. It would also be helpful if you contact me to let me know you are participating so I can make sure to direct people your way.

Join your neighbors for the annual “Night Out”

It is time once again for our annual neighborhood meeting and potluck, timed to coincide with the nationwide “Neighborhood Night Out” program on Tuesday, August 2. Because of the usual weather on the first Tuesday in August, we have once again made arrangements to have our party in air-conditioned comfort at the Columbia Country Club, starting at 5:30 pm. We will begin setting up at 5:00, so you can arrive any time after that. If you haven’t received a note in your mailbox yet, you should get it soon. Here are the particulars:

We will meet in the McAlester Room at the Country Club – dinner will start at 5:30
Your choice of hamburgers or hot dogs, with table service and condiments provided
Water, tea and coffee will be provided; there will be a cash bar if you wish to buy drinks or sodas.
Bring your favorite side dishes and/or desserts
Business meeting will start somewhere around 6:00
The swimming pool will be available (for a short time – only open until 7) For the special price of $2

We are asking for a donation of $6 per person, as that is what the Country Club is charging us. Any amount will be welcome, above or below that, and no one will be turned away. We also need an approximate count of how many people will be coming; call Vice-President Sarah Catlin-Dupuy at 573-289-8356, or e-mail her (see the “About” page) to let us know. If you forgot to call, come anyway, we won’t turn you away.

There won’t be a lot of business on the agenda, but there is some: the annual election of officers, and a discussion about the annual neighborhood-wide garage/yard sale. If you have other items for the meeting, just let us know.

It’s Time to Party!

This is a heads-up for the neighborhood! Our annual neighborhood potluck party will be on Tuesday evening, August 2, in conjunction with the National Night Out. We are making arrangements again this year to have it at the Columbia Country Club – more details when we get them ironed out. Mark your calendar and we’ll see you then!

Farewell to a long-time neighbor

I received word yesterday that Wayne Gladney passed away on Wednesday morning, June 8. His daughter, Suzanne, told me that he died as he had wanted to, peacefully at home, with family nearby. The obituary is to be in Sunday’s paper, and services will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, June 18, at Parker Funeral Service.

He was a good, long-time neighbor and took part in neighborhood activities when he was able. Our thoughts are with his wife, Betty, and the rest of the family at this time.

Annual patio party brunch coming up!

Here’s another heads up for a fun time in the neighborhood. Gary Smith and Randy Kilgore will again host a patio party and brunch at 804 Fairway, this year on Saturday, June 4, from 9-11 am. Join your neighbors on their lovely patio, sample Gary’s scrumptious scones and wander their beautiful garden.
